Lava Beds National Monument

July 22, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Today my brother and I went to Lava Beds National Monument near Tulelake, California. I had never been there before. We visited a number of the lava sites and toured four caves. I ended up getting “stuck” in a crawlspace because my brother got disoriented in the Catacombs cave, but I managed to get myself free and found my way out of it.

We didn’t have time to go to Medicine Lake, which is a highlight of the region. I would like to go there the next time I go. Actually, a side road from Highway 89 on the way to Burney Falls leads to it.

This weekend marks the 100th anniversary of the declaration of the caves being a national monument. There was a get-together to mark the occasion, but we decided to opt for the tour instead.
